Children’s Health Coverage, A Back-to-School Basic

If you do not have health insurance for your child(ren), please look into the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Children’s Medicaid. They provide health care coverage to families who earn up to 200% of the federal poverty level, about $42,400 for a family of four. Medicaid is free for children who qualify. CHIP enrollment fees are based on income and range from no fee to $50 for a year of coverage for all the children in a family.

Texas retailer HEB is among the organizations helping to encourage families to sign-up for CHIP/Children’s Medicaid. Every Saturday in August, from 10 am to 2 pm, select HEB stores across Central Texas host events where parents can get help applying for CHIP or Children’s Medicaid. Community social service groups will answer questions and help with filling out the application. The stores in the Austin area are located at:

  • 7112 Ed Bluestein, #125
  • 2701 E. 7th St.
  • 9414 N. Lamar Blvd.

For more information and the forms, go to the CHIP/Children’s Medicaid website at CHIP Medicaid.
