Dyslexia

Dyslexia, as defined in The Dyslexia Handbook—2007 published by TEA, is “…a disorder of constitutional origin manifested by a difficulty in learning to read, write, or spell, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural opportunity.” Some related disorders include “auditory imperception (hearing), dysphasia (speech), specific developmental dyslexia, developmental dysgraphia (writing), and developmental spelling disability.”

If a parent and/or teacher recognizes some of the signs of dyslexia, a request for testing can be made. Testing would be done by the Special Education Resource teacher, who has been trained to diagnose this disorder. The parent would be given notice of assessment and must first sign a parent Consent of Assessment form. If the student has dyslexia, a committee of knowledgeable persons would determine whether the student has a disability under 504. Not all dyslexic students qualify for 504 or Special Education.

Questions concerning dyslexia can be directed to Tracy Scott, Special Education Resource teacher at tscott@txed.net.
